  14. <p>     RETIRED. Alfred C. Haynes, 60, veteran United Airlines pilot
  15. hailed as a hero for saving the lives of 184 passengers and crew
  16. members when he crash-landed a crippled DC-10 in Sioux City,
  17. Iowa, two years ago; in Seattle. On July 19, 1989, his DC-10's
  18. hydraulic power system failed when an engine exploded,
  19. paralyzing all the flight-control surfaces of the plane. Haynes
  20. and his crew managed to bring the craft down by alternately
  21. accelerating and decelerating the right and left engines. The
  22. plane caught fire during the landing, killing 112 people.
