- <p> RETIRED. Alfred C. Haynes, 60, veteran United Airlines pilot
- hailed as a hero for saving the lives of 184 passengers and crew
- members when he crash-landed a crippled DC-10 in Sioux City,
- Iowa, two years ago; in Seattle. On July 19, 1989, his DC-10's
- hydraulic power system failed when an engine exploded,
- paralyzing all the flight-control surfaces of the plane. Haynes
- and his crew managed to bring the craft down by alternately
- accelerating and decelerating the right and left engines. The
- plane caught fire during the landing, killing 112 people.
